TOPPAN FORMS Supports Smooth Introduction of SuperMatrix Cards and Seals
-Providing comprehensive services from manufacturing and shipment to handling of inquiries-

May 26, 2017

DigitalHybrid Company TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. (“TOPPAN FORMS” hereunder) will start an initiative to accelerate the wide use of SuperMatrix (patented), a personal authentication/transaction authentication technology that was invented by BankGuard KK (headquartered in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Haruhiko Fujii, Engineering.Ph.D. , specializing in countermeasures against cyberattacks). TOPPAN FORMS will provide a comprehensive business process outsourcing (BPO) service related to the introduction of SuperMatrix, including the manufacturing and issuance of the necessary SuperMatrix cards and seals, shipment of the cards and seals to customers (users) and handling of related inquiries, as well as the system introduction.

Background

There are an increasing number of people who shop online and use online services such as stock trading and banking. Meanwhile, the number of victims of cybercrimes has also been increasing. According to the public relations material on cyberspace threats in 2016 that was released on March 23, 2017, by the National Police Agency, there were 1,291 cases of fraudulent remittance related to internet banking in 2016 and the damages from such crimes amounted to approx. 1.687 billion yen.

Financial institutions have been advancing countermeasures against cybercrimes, such as the introduction of a one-time password (OTP) and the distribution of antivirus software. However, the introduction of these measures is expensive. SuperMatrix offers the following three benefits. First, it can be incorporated into affordable printed materials, which do not depend on the hardware/software users environment. Second, the system uses images as random numbers. This protects users from phishing attacks, which lead users to input all random numbers, and brute-force attacks, to which the conventional random number tables containing only numeric figures are vulnerable. Third, in addition to personal authentication, SuperMatrix also permits transaction authentication (as a countermeasure against man-in-the-middle attacks), which is enabled by use of the random number table for specifying remittance destinations. It has a higher level of security than OTP, and the system is believed to be the optimal countermeasure against fraudulent remittance, which has become a problem with internet banking. TOPPAN FORMS believes that it is societally important to support the smooth introduction of this system by taking advantage of its expertise cultivated through the outsourced card issuance services it has provided for large-scale projects, such as ones on financial cards, insurance cards, ID cards and point cards.

Contents of the comprehensive service

  • 1. Manufacturing of SuperMatrix cards and seals and shipment to users
  • 2. Sending information to users

TOPPAN FORMS will provide this service by cooperating with LAC Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Itsuro Nishimoto; “LAC” hereunder), which provides the kit for developing software for embedding the SuperMatrix into a website and provides support for its introduction.
