TOPPAN FORMS Launches Readers and Writers Conforming to NFC Forum Specifications
Easily Facilitating Data Communication between Digital Devices

August 4, 2017

DigitalHybrid Company TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. (TOPPAN FORMS, hereunder) has developed the TN18301 Series (the products, hereunder), low price readers and writers with encryption functions, which conform to NFC Forum Specifications. Associated with the spread of smartphones and tablets equipped with NFC functionality, the environment is advancing so that users can easily transfer data between digital devices using NFC functionality. However, digital devices equipped with NFC functionality are still outnumbered by other devices. New types of readers and writers are increasingly required to readily add NFC functionality. The products support the three modes defined in the NFC Forum Specifications: (1) reader and writer, (2) card emulation functioning as a contactless IC card and (3) P2P that enables data exchange between NFC devices. For applications such as entrance and exit control and personal authentication, the products fulfill the necessary security with the U.S.'s sophisticated encryption standard, Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

TN18301(U),TN18301(E): Module for embedded devices

The TR63036 Series’ readers and writers have been sold since 2015, equipped with reader and writer functionality to primarily communicate with smart cards, used in personal authentication for multifunction printers in offices and entrance and exit control equipment. With the recent expansion of terminals equipped with NFC functionality, communication functions with smartphones are also required for conventional smart card readers and writers. In addition, it is also necessary to support new standard medium (smart cards) with more reliable security. Under these circumstances, the products now support NFC functionality, implementing functions for the card emulation mode and P2P mode. By expanding the encryption functions, the products support a new standard medium with higher security, such as MIFARE Plus, which was previously not supported by the existing models (TR63036 Series). Because the new products maintain compatibility with the existing models, customers can migrate to the new models with minimal system changes.

  • 1. Complies with NFC Forum Specifications (refer to the following figure; comforming to NFC Forum Tag Type 1 to 5)
  • 2. Supports command control with USB/UART communication as well as NCI (NFC Controller Interface) commands by I2C
  • 3. Equipped with encryption (secure) functions (supporting 3DES/AES and CRYPT01)
  • 4. Supports new standard medium such as MIFARE Plus, NTAG I2C plus, ICODE SLIX2 (certification), in addition to MIFARE 1K/4K/DES Fire, FeliCa Standard/Lite/Lite-S, ICODE SLI, etc.

Operation images and application examples for each mode

Mode Application Example
(1) Reader/writer mode
- Personal authentication for multifunction printers
- Access control (unlocking a door by holding a card over the device)
- Electronic money payment (connecting to POS terminals)
(2) Card emulation mode
Pairing of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with one-touch operation (simply holding a smartphone over the device will complete Wi-Fi and Bluetooth configuration)
(3) P2P mode
Data transfer (holding a smartphone over the device will retrieve image data, device maintenance information, etc.)

Future development

In addition to the applications of the existing models, such as personal authentication for multifunction printers used in offices and access control equipment, with the added NFC functionality, the products allow for generic use, such as coordination with payment terminals and smartphones. The products are scheduled to be sold in November, at an estimated price of around 5,000 yen (reference price when 1,000 devices are manufactured). TOPPAN FORMS is targeting sales of 100 million yen in FY 2018, including derived products.
