DigitalHybrid Company TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. (TOPPAN FORMS, hereunder) announces that it has developed two types of battery-less RFID labels equipped with detection functions that are usable as simplified sensors—an RFID label for unsealing detection and an RFID label for water leakage detection. Unlike conventional RFID labels that only acquire ID data, these two new types of labels enable their users to readily grasp label conditions, such as tampering and dampening, by detecting the disconnection of internal antennas, in addition to acquiring ID data. Making the most of those functions, the two types of labels will contribute to the enhancement of the efficiency of manual operations for managing goods and the improvement in the accuracy of operations for judging authentic and fake products.

RFID label for unsealing detection/RFID label for water leakage detection

The RFID labels for tamper detection have independent antennas in their detection and communications sections. They are expected to enhance convenience in security applications by making it easy to detect improper product tampering and judge authentic and fake products as they detect the disconnection of the antennas if they are damaged. The RFID labels for tamper detection adopt RFID chips equipped with the Tag Tamper functions*1 of NXP Semiconductors (NXP, hereunder). TOPPAN FORMS developed these two types of labels to meet the diverse demands of communication distances. The first type adopts UHF-band RFID chips to enable the simultaneous, long-distance reading of multiple packages. The second type, designed for short-distance communications, adopts HF-band RFID chips to realize individual management.

The RFID label for water leakage detection has a conductive metal antenna printed and wired on a piece of substrate paper using original TOPPAN FORMS technologies. The antenna disconnects and enables the label to detect water leakage when water makes the metal unable to expand togerther with the paper. TOPPAN FORMS assumes the use of this label for managing the quality of goods vulnerable to moisture and in areas such as life care.

Background

An ongoing shift to fog computing is expanding demand for supplying ID data to goods. Demand for products with sensing functions is also growing. Moreover, there is huge market demand for tamper detection as an application for judging authentic and fake products in the distribution of precious metals and high-priced cosmetics and as an application for judging the use and non-use of pharmaceuticals. In the meantime, the realization of simplified sensors enable to easily actualize this function has been sought because ordinary sensor devices have had problems with their prices.
To solve this problem, TOPPAN FORMS developed battery-less RFID labels with detection functions that have the functions of simplified sensors.

Future direction

TOPPAN FORMS will promote the introduction of RFID labels equipped with detection functions as an application for judging authentic and fake products in the distribution of precious metals and high-priced cosmetics as well as the delivery to distribution sites where the use and non-use of pharmaceuticals are judged. By so doing, TOPPAN FORMS will contribute to the adoption of fog computing using simplified sensors at distribution sites. It will also continue the development of RFID labels equipped with detection functions, aiming to further advance their functions.
TOPPAN FORMS plans to achieve net sales of 3 billion yen with products related to RFID labels equipped with detection labels, including systems using such RFID labels and products associated with their readers, by fiscal 2020.
