TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. (TOPPAN FORMS hereunder), a DigitalHybrid company, and Kochizu Library Co., Ltd. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; Kochizu Library hereunder) announce the launch of the Shizuoka Version (from Mishima to Shirasukasyuku) in the handscroll-style series of the 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road, which combines ukiyo-e with old maps, enabling buyers to imagine the actual places that Hiroshige depicted in his art. Sales will start from today.

As the first step in this handscrolls series, TOPPAN FORMS and Kochizu Library launched (1) the Complete Version (from Nihonbashi to Kyoto) and (2) the Tokyo & Kanagawa Version (from Nihonbashi to Hakone) in September 2017. As the second step in the series for each area, (3) the Shizuoka Version (from Mishima to Shirasukasyuku) is added to the lineup. The Shizuoka Version contains the largest number of popular post stations of the 53 stations on the Tokaido Road, such as Mariko (famously titled “Maruko” in the first edition of the work) and Kanbara. The next version, featuring the areas west of Shizuoka, is planned to be launched by the end of 2019 as (4) the Aichi, Mie, Shiga and Kyoto Version.
By dividing the handscrolls by area, the price of each version can be reduced, aiming to meet the needs of foreign tourists and fans of Edo-period culture, as well as the corporate gift needs of community-based companies and organizations in each area.

Future Direction

TOPPAN FORMS established the MAKI-MONO(Makimono) brand last year and is advancing the development of products with a new style similar to the above in addition to reproduction and reprint businesses of cultural artifacts that utilize digital technologies to enable more people to enjoy, appreciate and familiarize themselves with Japanese culture. Moving forward, TOPPAN FORMS will continue to deepen the level of its cooperative partnership with Kochizu Library to create a new series of emaki picture scrolls depicting other famous landscapes.
