DigitalHybrid Company TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Koichi Sakata; hereinafter “TOPPAN FORMS”) and TRYANGLE K.K. (Head Office: Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director: Takahiro Suzuki; hereinafter “TRYANGLE”, which provides comprehensive maritime services, will conduct an experience-based demonstration for the provision of a universal design sound service on the Yokosuka Naval Port Cruise Tour operated by TRYANGLE.

The experience-based demonstration of the service will be carried out utilizing the universal design of sound support system “Omotenashi Guide”, a smartphone application of sounds from Yamaha Corporation. By enabling written information about the cruise delivered in Japanese to be viewed in multiple languages (languages supported during the experience-based demonstration of the service are Japanese and English) using a smartphone, the service aims to enhance the information contained in Japanese announcements provided to foreign tourists who do not understand Japanese, senior citizens with hearing disabilities, and the hearing-impaired.

Procedure

(1) Download “Omotenashi Guide” from App Store or Google Play Store
(2) When announcements are made onboard the boat, launch “Omotenashi Guide”
(3) Multilingual text corresponding to the announcement is displayed on the smartphone screen.

Overview of experience-based demonstration of service

  • Period: February 4, 2019 (Mon) to February 28, 2019 (Thurs)
  • Target: Passengers onboard cruise operating within the period stated above
  • Place: On board the Yokosuka Naval Port Cruise Tour ship
  • Display contents: Name and role of ship, the vessel’s history and other tourist information
  • Languages supported: Japanese, English

Background

Japan’s declining birthrate and aging population call for the creation of a society that allows the participation of greater numbers of people, including the elderly, the disabled, and non-Japanese, in order to compensate for the shortage of human resources. In order to address such social challenges, the public and private sectors are promoting the development of information infrastructure to provide information that is transmitted more effectively in an easy-to-understand format to as many people as possible.
TOPPAN FORMS regards the forms and other printed materials it provides to client companies, and Web and smartphone applications as part of the social information infrastructure, and has therefore provided goods and services that incorporate a universal design (UD) and UI/UX dimension, in order to accurately convey information to people of diverse backgrounds.
By participating in the “Sound UD Promotion Consortium” promoting the universal design of sound across the industry, TOPPAN FORMS will continue to provide services that are compatible with universal design from a new angle.

Future plans

As well as providing services centered on “Omotenashi Guide” to promote inbound tourism and barrier-free initiatives for the holding of large-scale sporting events, TOPPAN FORMS aims to create a more comfortable society for foreign visitors, elderly people who are hard of hearing, and the hearing-impaired by promoting an information infrastructure that conveys disaster and other emergency information in an accurate and timely manner.
