TOPPAN FORMS Develops RFID Tags Supporting HF and UHF Bands
Enabling Central Management of Product Life Cycle Using One Tag

DigitalHybrid Company TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. (“TOPPAN FORMS” hereunder) has developed a “Two Frequency-Band RFID Tag,” which functions as short-distance communication (HF band/near-field communication (NFC)) and long-distance communication (UHF band) on one tag. This RFID tag includes both the advantages of the HF band, which is useful for individually managing articles in operations such as process management and the determination of authenticity in the fields of manufacturing, as well as the advantage of the UHF band, which is useful in performing batch reading and managing multiple articles such as when taking inventory and performing stock management.
The Two Frequency-Band RFID Tag is capable of implementing both short-distance and long-distance communication with one RFID tag, achieving the real-time gathering of traceability data without requiring the proper use or replacement of different RFID tags in all usage environments in the product life cycle, contributing to its visualization and optimization.

Example of Use Case

Background

RFID tags for HF bands for secure, one-on-one communication have conventionally been used for process management in the fields of manufacturing and at medical sites. On the other hand, the use of RFID tags for UHF bands capable of implementing the batch reading of tags on multiple articles in logistics has been increasing, under the background of the labor shortage. In addition, the need for efficiently obtaining traceability from the shipping of products to their delivery to consumers by using RFID tags attached to products as well as for logistics management and inventory taking has been increasing.
However, because conventional RFID tags for HF bands can be used for short-distance communication from a few centimeters to a few tens of centimeters, they are not suitable for use in logistics management and inventory taking, requiring multiple steps for process management, including the separate introduction of communication by UHF bands as necessary. Therefore, RFID tags available for multiple processes are desired by the market.
In the Two Frequency-Band RFID Tag, two antenna circuits for the HF band and the UHF band are coupled to one RFID chip, which enables the reading and writing of data with a corresponding reader and a writer. This configuration enables the operation over multiple processes without having to replace the RFID tags attached to the products.

Future Development

TOPPAN FORMS will advance the design of antennas and development of applications for Two Frequency-Band RFID Tag according to the purposes of use by customers mainly in the fields of manufacturing, medicine and pharmaceuticals, aiming at achieving sales of 500M JPY by FY2021, including RFID tags and the readers. Note that TOPPAN FORMS is scheduled to exhibit the Two Frequency-Band RFID Tag at the 8th IoT/M2M Exhibition [Spring] to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from April 10 to April 12, 2019.
