TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. Begins to Provide a New Service for Supporting Financial Institutions in Fulfilling Their Fiduciary Duty Concerning Communication Tools

May 16, 2017

DigitalHybrid Company TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. (“TOPPAN FORMS” hereunder) will begin to provide "FD Fit Diagnosis", a new service with which the company diagnoses a financial institution’s level of compliance with its fiduciary duty and optimizes the design of its tools for communicating with its customers. Through this new service, TOPPAN FORMS will help financial institutions to fulfill their fiduciary duty, by diagnosing and improving their existing communication tools with respect to two of the seven Principles of Fiduciary Duty that was announced by the Financial Services Agency of Japan in March 2017--“Provision of Important Information that is Easily Understandable to the Client” and “Provision of Services Suitable for Each Client,” which are related to customer communication.
"FD Fit Diagnosis" applies to various communication tools that are provided by financial institutions for customers, including forms, brochures and websites. TOPPAN FORMS has expertise in the design and production of such tools, which it has nurtured through its many years of operation. The company will have the existing tools objectively diagnosed by experts, analyze them using scientific methods, and create reports on the level of compliance with the fiduciary duty. In addition, TOPPAN FORMS will create a design for improving the identified issues and will even verify the effect of the improvements, thereby reducing the number of inquiries from customers, defective entries and cost for handling defects, as well as making other improvements. The company will also help financial institutions to improve their customer service by supporting content optimization for each customer under the supervision of financial experts such as financial planners.

About the fiduciary duty

The fiduciary duty refers to the roles and responsibilities of financial institutions related to product development, sales, management and asset management, respectively. In March 2017, the Financial Services Agency of Japan announced the Principles of Fiduciary Duty by clarifying the seven principles: 1) Establishment and Announcement of the Policy concerning Fiduciary Duty; 2) Pursuing the Best Interest of Clients; 3) Appropriate Management of Conflicts of Interest; 4) Clarification on Fees, etc.; 5) Provision of Important Information that is Easily Understandable for Each Client; 6) Provision of Services Suitable for Each Client, and; 7) Establishing the Framework for Appropriately Motivating its Personnel to Comply with Fiduciary Duty. The Financial Services Agency has requested that financial institutions comply with these principles.

Future Development

TOPPAN FORMS will help financial institutions to improve their communication issues, including compliance with their fiduciary duty, by making use of its expertise that has been cultivated through the application of universal design to forms, brochures and other communication tools and the improvement of user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) on websites, smartphone applications and similar tools. The company will also continue to develop new services that will solve various issues in customer communication faced by financial institutions.
TOPPAN FORMS will provide FD Fit Diagnosis mainly to banks, securities companies and life and nonlife insurance companies, aiming to introduce it at 30 companies.
