TOPPAN FORMS Begins Providing “Senior Fit Diagnosis,” a Design Diagnosis Service for Senior People
Service Supervised by Cognitive Research Specialist and Compatible with Multiple Channels

March 15, 2018

Digital Hybrid Company TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. (TOPPAN FORMS, hereunder) has developed Senior Fit Diagnosis, a diagnosis service for designs that provide easy-to-understand information to senior people and give them a sense of security, under the supervison of Waseda Unversity Professor Katsumi Watanabe, a cognitive research specialist. TOPPAN FORM will begin offering this new service to companies and local governments, whose customers include senior people, on March 15, 2018.
Senior Fit Diagnosis is a service in the field of information communication aimed at senior people with falling degrees of recognition and comprehension. With this service, points that make designs hard for senior people to read are identified through original diagnosis and their identification is linked with design improvement. Senior Fit Diagnosis derives optimum designs for senior people by combining the viewpoint of universal design (UD), the viewpoint of cognitive research specialists and the viewpont of science and making diagnoses from mutiple perspectives.
Moreover, Senior Fit Diagnosis covers digital media, such as web pages and applications for smartphones and tablets, in addition to print media. Senior Fit Diagnosis can support information communication to senior people via multiple channels for that reason.

Background

The declining birthrate and rising proportion of senior people in Japan provides the background for this development. According to a survey by the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the number of senior people (those 65 years of age or older) in Japan were estimated to total 35,140,000 as of September 15, 2017. They accounted for 27.7% of the country’s total population*1. Under these conditions, demand for improving communications with senior people is high. This demand is expected to continue to grow.
TOPPAN FORMS’ service for improving information communication through UDs covers members of diverse generations. The service has achieved a good track record in the fields of both print and digital media. Senior Fit Diagnosis is a service aimed at communicating information more effectively by narrowing targets down to senior people.
