DigitalHybrid Company TOPPAN FORMS CO., LTD. (hereinafter “TOPPAN FORMS”) and Kochizu Library Co., Ltd. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative: Shinichi Kumagai; hereinafter “Kochizu Library”) will today expand the lineup of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road Illustrated Handscroll Series with the addition of the (traditional) Chinese version and the Aichi, Mie, Shiga, and Kyoto version (Futakawa - Keishi), further enabling viewers to imagine and appreciate the places Utagawa Hiroshige drew in ukiyo-e by making them a scroll print with ukiyo-e and an old map combined.

(Traditonal) Chinese version

The (traditional) Chinese version is a product that includes a commentary, which in previous editions was written in Japanese and English, in Japanese and (traditional) Chinese. We have added them to the lineup to allow the increasing number of tourists visiting Japan from Chinese-speaking countries to feel more familiar with and enjoy Japanese culture.

Aichi, Mie, Shiga, and Kyoto version (Futakawa - Keishi)

We have added to the lineup a new Aichi, Mie, Shiga, and Kyoto version (Futakawa - Keishi) which contains stations west of those in the Shizuoka version.
We aim to meet the needs of foreign tourists and Edo culture fans as well as corporate gift needs from community-based companies and groups in each area by holding down the price per piece by dividing the products by area.

Future development

TOPPAN FORMS is proceeding with the development of new style products as above, in addition to the replication and reprinting business of cultural assets making full use of its digital printing technology under theMAKI-MONObrand to enable more people to intimately enjoy Japanese culture. TOPPAN FORMS will continue to work to commercialize new content as scroll prints by further deepening the collaboration with Kochizu Library with whom the Company has designed this product jointly.

Reference information

  • ■“Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road Illustrated Handscroll Series”
This print of a scroll painting which enables the viewers to imagine and appreciate the places that Utagawa Hiroshige, a ukiyo-e artist representative of the Edo Period, painted in ukiyo-e because it includes an old map of the Tokaido road named “Tokai Kiso Ryodo Chukai Hozukan” and coordinates it with each of the 55 pieces of the “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road,” a series of ukiyo-e woodcut prints by Hiroshige. While replicated ukiyo-e prints have been appreciated as framed pictures or in books, we have incorporated a style of enjoying ukiyo-e in the form of a scroll print combining famous ukiyo-e works and an old map.

    • ■Product concept
・Contribute to the popularization of Japanese ukiyo-e, displaying to the world both ukiyo-e and the scroll print culture which developed independently in Japan.
・Express the continuity of the road in the form of the scroll print combined with an old map of the Tokaido road.
・Enable people to enjoy and appreciate picture scrolls through the tactile experience of picking them up and touching them, targeted at foreign tourists and Edo culture fans.
・Show the places which Hiroshige is presumed to have drawn and his perspective in the old map.
